Richard Harrison has a mixed dairy and Hereford beef herd combining management of some important wildlife habitats with farming some fields more intensively. Richard has undertaken some serious re-engineering of one of his floodplain meadows to allow the area to flood. The aim is to capture water during the wettest conditions to help alleviate flooding further down stream, whilst providing suitable breeding and foraging habitat for wading birds.
Richard is also managing 32 acres of species-rich pasture and hay meadows as well as over 6 km of buffer strips that are connecting wildlife areas and mopping up excess nutrients from the more intensively farmed grassland, preventing pollution of the river.
leading the way in creating environmentally sustainable & biodiverse farmscapes.
